EVE Online Alliance Tournaments

July 2006 - Current

The developers of EVE Online, an MMO produced by Icelanders CCP, hold a bi-annual Alliance Tournament. Over six days and two weekends, up to 700 players take part in a structured tournament to decide the winning team on the final day.

My role was leading the EVE TV team in the filming of the entire event, and streaming it live over the internet. My main tasks included:

  • Hosting the broadcasts live.
  • Organisation of a cast of experts and guests for live broadcasts of between three and six hours.
  • Leading discussion live with cast about the tournament itself, as well as other pertinent issues.
  • Recruitment of volunteers as cast and crew from a pool of players who applied to be on the show for the event, including organising the accommodation and logistics of getting people to Iceland from all over the world.
  • Set design, construction, and maintenance.
  • Handling submitted material for inclusion into the broadcast.
  • Liasing with clients to ensure we created and delivered the exact show format they wished for; both initial contact and ongoing relations during and after the event.
  • Liasing with the streaming server company.

EVE TV Weekly

March 2007 - November 2007

As part of the team who developed the Alliance Tournament Coverage, I created and developed the weekly show for EVE TV, where I was involved with nearly every aspect of the show:

  • Research and scripting; delivering the script to the relevant people, rehearsing and coaching in preparation for a day of filming once a week; organising the shooting of the material in conjunction with the director, and editing the script to suit the show on the fly.
  • Set design, construction, maintenance and weekly assembly.
  • Managing a team of volunteer reporters, who researched news and wrote stories for inclusion into the script.
  • Hosting and presenting the show, including newsreading and interviews.
  • Editing for sections of the show, including assembling pre-recorded material, working with green-screen CGI technology, and the integration of game footage with live film.
  • Ensuring content delivery; formatting and uploading the finished show to the servers, and maintaining the EVE TV website, keeping it updated with the latest shows and information.

EVE Online Fanfest

November 2006, November 2007

CCP hold a yearly Fanfest in Reykjavik, as an opportunity for players to meet each other and the game developers, as well as a chance to showcase future game development and throw a huge party. For the last two I have been part of the team filming, archiving and broadcasting the event live over the internet, leading the team in 2007.

Some of the highlights involved Keynote speeches from Lead Game Developers, Live streaming from the Party itself, and an 11-hour broadcast which included a studio with 15 different guests, doing interviews and commentary throughout the day.

EVE Online / E-ON Promotional DVD

November 2007

I led a team who were commissioned by CCP to produce a DVD to be given away as promotional material and with MMM Publishing's quarterly magazine E-ON. This included the gathering of relevant footage, and its incorporation into a custom-built DVD architecture.
